Ending the Medicare Sign-up Confusion

Signing up for Medicare can be confusing. As you approach that beloved age of 65, you will be inundated with materials from Medicare and insurance companies. Though the intent of these materials is to explain and simplify the process, it isn’t working.

Why Long Term Care Insurance?

While we all desire to live a long and healthy life, odds are that we will experience health issues. A 2011 article in US News & World Report discussed “5 reasons you need a long-term care plan”. 

The 5 reasons sited are: 

  1. Odds favor needing long-term care.
  2. Care expenses are high and rising.
  3. Family members are less likely to provide care.
  4. Consumers don’t have plans or money for long-term care.
  5. Government will be forced to trim care benefits.

According to the article, currently, one  in seven people over age 65 needs in-home care.  The percentage rises drastically as people live past age 80. One in 20 people ages 65 to 74 have Alzheimer’ disease, and nearly half of those age 85 and older may have the disease according to Alzheimer’s Tennessee, Inc.   More than 5.4 million Americans have Alzheimer’s disease.  That number is expected to rise to 16 million by the year 2050.  Nearly all of these elders will require some level of care by others during their lifetime.  (more…)
